Losing a loved one can leave you feeling lost. Many people are left wondering what they should do next. Below is a simplified checklist for things you may want to consider. However, the most important step you can take is contacting The Legacy Lawyers for any estate administration or litigation needs.
Contact funeral home or mortuary. The deceased may also have a specific religious leader that should be notified for the final services.
Contact list. It is difficult to notify friends and family of the death, so having a contact list can help ensure nobody is forgotten. It also allows you to have a close friend make the calls if it is too emotionally draining for you.
Death certificate. Obtaining certified copies of the death certificate is important to provide to the deceaseds insurance companies, banks, and other such entities.
Estate planning documents. If there is a will or trust, contact us to discuss how to handle the administration of the estate.
Bank accounts. If the deceaseds bank account is not held jointly (or otherwise transferred), you must determine how to transfer the funds. It is also important to locate the keys to safe deposit boxes and inventory the contents.
Retirement accounts. You must determine how your loved ones 401k, pension, IRA, or other retirement accounts will be transferred.
Life Insurance. You will need to contact the insurance company to determine who is named as the beneficiary of any life insurance proceeds.
Creditors. The creditors of your loved one should be informed of the death. Remember, all utility bills of the deceased must continue to be paid until you discontinue them.
Vehicles. The title and insurance coverage of vehicles, motorcycles, or boats must be changed, unless otherwise handled in the estate plan.
Homeowners insurance. The insurance company holding the policy for the deceaseds home should be contacted. They can assist you with how to proceed.
